Royston Hospital in Hastings has introduced Hawke’s Bay’s first robotic-assisted surgical system, significantly improving local access to advanced procedures that previously required patients to travel outside the region.
The Evolution Healthcare Group facility has installed the Medtronic Hugo™ robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system, enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision, control, and visualisation through minimally invasive techniques.
The technology is now being utilised across multiple specialties, including urology, gynaecology, and general surgery.
Hawke’s Bay urologist Dr Kenny du Toit, who trained on the Hugo system in Sydney prior to its implementation at Royston, described the development as a major step forward for both clinicians and patients.
“Robotic-assisted surgery allows us to perform highly complex procedures with greater efficiency and accuracy. For suitable patients, this can translate into smoother recovery and faster return to normal activities,” he said.
“Importantly, it expands treatment options for local residents who previously needed to travel outside Hawke’s Bay. We hope this will soon create pathways to extend access across both private and public health sectors.”
Royston Hospital General Manager Anna Harland said the investment reflects a broader commitment to advancing regional healthcare delivery while strengthening clinical capabilities.
“Introducing robotic-assisted surgery marks an important milestone for healthcare in Hawke’s Bay. It enables our surgical teams to deliver modern, high-quality care while allowing patients to remain close to their families and support networks during treatment,” she said.
The hospital has also hosted demonstration sessions for local clinicians and healthcare professionals, offering insights into the system’s capabilities, referral processes, and surgical planning.
