First health mission to China targets AI, robotics, precision cancer care and drug development

Abu Dhabi is exploring new healthcare and life sciences partnerships with China in artificial intelligence (AI), medical robotics, precision cancer care, advanced diagnostics and drug development as the emirate seeks to strengthen international collaboration across research and healthcare innovation.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) is leading the emirate’s first health and life sciences mission to China, with the delegation visiting Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing from September 21 to 30.

During the mission, Abu Dhabi health officials are meeting with Chinese government entities, hospitals, universities and technology companies to identify opportunities for research collaboration, clinical cooperation and the adoption of emerging healthcare technologies.

Four Strategic Areas of Collaboration

The mission is centred on four key areas: AI, robotics and medical technology; precision cancer care and advanced diagnostics; drug development and clinical trials; and healthcare regulation and traditional medicine.

The discussions reflect a broader focus on translating scientific research and technological advances into practical healthcare applications.

According to DoH, the delegation is examining how medical discoveries and emerging technologies can move more efficiently from research environments into treatments and healthcare services that benefit patients.

China has developed significant capabilities across biotechnology, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. Abu Dhabi, meanwhile, is seeking to leverage its health data ecosystem, genomics programmes and healthcare infrastructure to evaluate and implement emerging technologies.

Connecting Research With Patient Care

Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said the mission is intended to establish longer-term cooperation between the two healthcare ecosystems.

“China and Abu Dhabi share an ambition to ensure that scientific progress translates into better health,” she said.

“By connecting our researchers, clinicians and innovators, we want to create lasting pathways for collaboration that benefit both ecosystems.”

The discussions will also examine potential applications of AI and robotics in healthcare, approaches to strengthening early disease detection and opportunities to accelerate the development of new treatments.

For Abu Dhabi, such partnerships could support the emirate’s efforts to build international research networks while creating additional opportunities for collaboration between healthcare providers, technology companies, researchers and life sciences organisations.

Abu Dhabi Healthcare and Life Sciences Delegation

The Abu Dhabi delegation includes representatives from Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, PureHealth, Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and L’IMAD.

The mission is also expected to create a pathway for Chinese healthcare and life sciences organisations to engage with Abu Dhabi’s wider healthcare innovation ecosystem.

Chinese organisations will be invited to participate in the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit 2026, scheduled for October 20–22.

According to DoH, the summit will provide an opportunity to continue discussions initiated during the China mission and identify potential longer-term partnerships spanning healthcare delivery, research, technology and life sciences.

The growing engagement between Abu Dhabi and China highlights the increasing role of cross-border partnerships in advancing AI-enabled healthcare, precision medicine, medical technology and pharmaceutical innovation.
