New Delhi, India: Dr. Dharminder Nagar, Founder and Managing Director of Paras Health, chose to return to India after completing his MBBS and MS at Imperial College London and an MBA from Harvard Business School, with a vision to improve access to quality healthcare in underserved regions rather than pursuing a medical career abroad.
Recognizing the limited availability of advanced medical services in cities such as Patna, Darbhanga, and Ranchi, Dr. Nagar established Paras Healthcare in 2006 to address a significant gap in tertiary and quaternary care across North India.
The company’s expansion was not without challenges. During the development of Paras Hospital in Patna in 2011, reports indicated that Dr. Nagar received death threats from local criminal elements. Despite these obstacles, the hospital was successfully completed and became Bihar’s first private super-specialty hospital, marking a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
Today, Paras Health has grown into one of North India’s leading healthcare providers, operating eight hospitals with a capacity of more than 2,200 beds. The healthcare network reported ₹1,606 crore in revenue for FY2025–26 and is preparing for a proposed ₹1,800 crore initial public offering (IPO), reflecting its continued expansion and investor confidence.
The Paras Health story underscores a key lesson in healthcare delivery: the need for quality medical services often exists long before providers enter underserved markets. Rather than creating demand, the organization focused on improving access to specialized care in regions historically lacking advanced healthcare infrastructure.
Its growth illustrates how strategic investments in underserved geographies can expand healthcare accessibility while building a sustainable healthcare enterprise, offering an example of how addressing unmet patient needs can generate both social impact and long-term business value.
