BioSapien, a pioneering drug delivery platform focused on localized cancer treatment, has announced the successful closure of a $5.5 million (AED 20.2 million) pre-Series A funding round. The round was led by Global Ventures, with participation from Dara Holdings.
Fueling Patient Trials and Innovation
The funds will accelerate BioSapien’s clinical trials in the UAE, with patient enrollment in Abu Dhabi slated to begin in Q2 2025. The investment will also enhance product development, manufacturing capabilities, and talent acquisition, the company confirmed.
BioSapien’s core innovation, MediChip, is a 3D-printed, slow-release drug delivery platform designed to attach to various tissues and minimize systemic side effects. The platform aligns with the FDA’s definition of a drug delivery system—administering therapeutic substances into the body to control drug release for better treatment outcomes.
Strategic Focus on Cancer and Beyond
The company is initially targeting colorectal cancer patients for its clinical trials but has ambitious plans to extend its platform’s reach. Future applications include treatments for pancreatic and lung cancers, as well as non-cancer uses like opioid delivery, hormone therapy, biologics, and cell and gene therapies.
“There is a high unmet need for sustained drug release with minimal side effects in healthcare. Over 30% of chemotherapy patients experience severe side effects, often leading to reduced or discontinued treatment,” said Khatija Ali, founder and CEO of BioSapien.
Enhancing Patient Outcomes
BioSapien’s localized approach to drug delivery focuses on the tumor microenvironment, enhancing treatment efficacy while reducing the need for invasive surgeries. The platform is designed to improve the quality of life for patients undergoing chemotherapy by minimizing treatment interruptions and systemic side effects, ultimately leading to better surgical outcomes and fewer hospital visits.
Market Opportunity
The global cancer drug delivery market is valued at $247 billion, with colorectal cancer contributing $19 billion. These markets are projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2% and 4%, respectively, signaling significant opportunities for BioSapien’s innovative solutions.
This funding round marks a significant milestone for BioSapien as it works to revolutionize cancer treatment and redefine drug delivery systems worldwide.
