Abu Dhabi is building an integrated reproductive health ecosystem combining advanced clinical care, genomics, research, artificial intelligence and innovation, with an ambition to position the emirate as a global hub for the future of reproductive health.
The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has launched the Abu Dhabi Programme for the Future of Reproductive Health, alongside a roadmap outlining its targets through 2030.
The programme brings together healthcare providers, researchers, innovators and specialised talent across the reproductive health ecosystem. Its objective is to advance prevention, diagnosis and treatment while supporting the development of new standards, technologies and solutions in reproductive medicine.
Building an Integrated Reproductive Health Ecosystem
The programme takes an integrated approach to reproductive health, covering the patient journey from prevention and preconception care through genetic screening, fertility diagnosis and treatment, assisted reproductive technologies and fertility preservation.
Services include fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), as well as egg freezing and embryo preservation.
By connecting these services with genomics, genetic data, advanced healthcare technologies and scientific research, Abu Dhabi aims to develop increasingly precise and personalised approaches to reproductive care.
The programme also places reproductive health within a broader framework of healthier families, quality of life and sustainable communities, while recognising the shared role of both men and women throughout the reproductive health journey.
Combining Clinical Expertise With Research and Innovation
According to DoH, the programme currently brings together more than 2,000 clinical, scientific and technical professionals working across more than 250 facilities in different areas of reproductive health.
The ecosystem is expected to expand through the establishment of Centres of Excellence and the attraction of international medical centres, companies, physicians, scientists, researchers and embryologists.
These efforts are intended to strengthen local capabilities while bringing specialised knowledge and advanced reproductive technologies to Abu Dhabi.
His Excellency Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said the programme is designed to integrate prevention, early intervention, data, genomics, scientific research and advanced clinical expertise.
“Through the Abu Dhabi Programme for the Future of Reproductive Health, we aim to continue delivering proactive, personalised care that supports individuals and families throughout every stage of their reproductive health journey and translates innovation into tangible health outcomes,” Al Mansoori said.
He added that the initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a leading global destination for reproductive health services.
Genomics and Genetic Screening at the Core
Genomics and genetic testing form a central component of the programme.
Abu Dhabi is leveraging a database containing nearly one million genomes, alongside premarital and preconception genetic screening initiatives, to identify inherited risks earlier and support more informed reproductive decisions.
Genomic information is also being incorporated into assisted reproductive care. According to DoH, genetic testing and genomic data can support embryo assessment, improve understanding of factors associated with fertility challenges and contribute to more personalised treatment pathways.
The integration of genomic medicine with reproductive healthcare reflects a broader shift towards preventive and precision medicine, where health data can increasingly be used to identify risks before they develop into more complex clinical challenges.
Targeting Higher IVF Success Rates
Abu Dhabi reports that IVF success rates across the emirate have reached 59 per cent, placing the emirate among the highest globally, according to the Department of Health.
The programme aims to increase IVF success rates to 80 per cent by 2030.
To support this ambition, Abu Dhabi plans to further integrate precision medicine, genomics, artificial intelligence, health data analytics and scientific research into reproductive healthcare.
These technologies could support improvements across the reproductive health pathway, including earlier diagnosis, treatment selection, clinical decision-making and personalised care.
Her Excellency Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said reproductive health begins before treatment is required, with prevention and early screening playing an important role in identifying risks.
“Through this programme, we are bringing together healthcare providers, researchers and innovators, supported by genomics, advanced technologies and a flexible regulatory environment that enables the responsible adoption of the latest medical advances,” Al Ghaithi said.
She added that the programme is intended to improve the prospects of individuals seeking to start a family through more precise and personalised care.
Global Reproductive Health Advisory Council
As part of the initiative, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has established the Global Reproductive Health Advisory Council, described by the department as the world’s first council of its kind.
The council brings together international experts and researchers to contribute to the development of global standards, identify research priorities, strengthen international collaboration and accelerate the adoption of leading practices and innovations within Abu Dhabi’s clinical environment.
The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy of combining healthcare delivery with research, innovation and international knowledge exchange.
From Healthcare Services to a Knowledge Ecosystem
The Abu Dhabi Programme for the Future of Reproductive Health represents a broader evolution in the emirate’s healthcare strategy—from delivering specialised reproductive health services to building an integrated ecosystem focused on research, technology, talent and innovation.
With its healthcare and digital infrastructure, regulatory environment and expanding research capabilities, Abu Dhabi is seeking to create an environment where emerging technologies and scientific discoveries can move more rapidly from research into clinical practice.
The programme’s 2030 roadmap places reproductive health at the intersection of precision medicine, genomics, artificial intelligence, health data and advanced clinical care.
For Abu Dhabi, the initiative is therefore not only about expanding fertility services. It is also an effort to develop the scientific and healthcare infrastructure required to influence how reproductive health is researched, delivered and innovated in the years ahead.
