Abu Dhabi, UAE: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has achieved another milestone in cardiovascular innovation by becoming the first hospital in the United Arab Emirates to implant a wireless heart monitoring device for patients living with chronic heart failure. The breakthrough technology enables physicians to detect early signs of worsening heart failure before symptoms become apparent, allowing for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.
The advanced implant is a miniature wireless sensor positioned within the pulmonary artery—the blood vessel responsible for transporting blood from the heart to the lungs. Once implanted, the device continuously measures pulmonary artery pressure and securely transmits the data to the patient’s medical team, enabling real-time remote monitoring.
By identifying subtle pressure changes that indicate deteriorating heart function, clinicians can proactively adjust medications and treatment plans before patients experience severe symptoms or require emergency hospitalization. This personalized approach is expected to significantly reduce hospital admissions while improving long-term disease management.
Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, emphasized the significance of the innovation, stating that the technology represents a major advancement in the management of chronic heart failure.
“Instead of waiting for symptoms to worsen and require hospitalisation, we can now monitor patients proactively and intervene earlier,” Dr. Haber said.
Dr. Nadya Almatrooshi, Staff Physician in Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, highlighted the positive impact on patients’ daily lives.
“Continuous cardiac remote monitoring provides reassurance and greater confidence in managing heart failure on a day-to-day basis,” she said. “Many patients experience better symptom control and an improved quality of life through earlier clinical intervention.”
The implant is intended for patients with moderate to severe chronic heart failure who have experienced at least one hospitalization related to the condition within the previous 12 months despite receiving guideline-directed medical therapy.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi successfully performed the UAE’s first two implant procedures on Emirati patients aged 62 and 79, both of whom had experienced multiple hospital admissions due to recurring heart failure episodes.
The minimally invasive procedure is performed in the hospital’s cardiac catheterisation laboratory under local anaesthesia with mild sedation and typically takes between one and two hours. Most patients remain under observation for up to 24 hours, although some may be discharged on the same day. Recovery is generally rapid, with many patients resuming normal daily activities within one to two days.
The introduction of this wireless heart monitoring technology further strengthens Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive cardiovascular program. The hospital is recognized by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi as a Centre of Excellence for Adult Cardiac Surgery and was ranked the No. 1 hospital in the Middle East for Cardiology in Newsweek’s Best Specialized Hospitals Middle East 2026 rankings.
Hospital officials noted that the latest innovation reflects Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to advanced cardiovascular care, enhancing remote patient monitoring, and delivering more personalized treatment solutions for heart failure patients across the UAE.
The Health Colossus Insight
Heart failure remains one of the leading causes of hospitalization worldwide, placing significant pressure on healthcare systems and affecting millions of patients. The adoption of wireless implantable monitoring technology marks a transformative shift from reactive treatment to proactive disease management. As digital health and remote patient monitoring continue to evolve, innovations such as these are expected to reduce healthcare costs, improve patient quality of life, and support the broader transition toward value-based healthcare. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s achievement reinforces the UAE’s growing position as a regional leader in advanced cardiovascular medicine and digital healthcare innovation.
