Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), in partnership with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and PureHealth, has launched an early detection clinic for Type 1 diabetes, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s growing focus on predictive, prevention-oriented healthcare.
The initiative is designed to identify children and adolescents under 18 who may be at higher risk of developing Type 1 diabetes, particularly those with a family history of the condition.
🧬 Moving From Diagnosis to Early Detection
Unlike conventional approaches that often identify Type 1 diabetes after symptoms emerge, the clinic uses blood-based screening to detect diabetes-related antibodies before clinical symptoms appear.
This approach can provide healthcare professionals and families with an earlier window for monitoring, education, and clinical decision-making.
🩺 Building a Structured Care Pathway
Early identification also enables patients and families to enter a structured monitoring pathway before the onset of symptomatic disease. This can support timely education, follow-up, and preparedness for potential progression, while potentially reducing emergency presentations associated with late diagnosis.
💉 Expanding Access to Innovative Therapies
Eligible patients may also gain access, with support from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, to teplizumab, the first FDA-approved therapy shown to delay the onset of Stage 3 Type 1 diabetes in eligible individuals.
The availability of disease-modifying treatment alongside early screening represents an important evolution in the management of Type 1 diabetes—from responding to disease after onset toward intervening earlier in its progression.
⚙️ Technology-Enabled Diabetes Management
The initiative also incorporates access to Omnipod 5, an automated insulin delivery system, reflecting the growing role of technology in diabetes management.
The introduction of such technologies through Abu Dhabi’s Health Technology Assessment (HTA) framework further highlights the importance of evidence-based evaluation when integrating innovative healthcare solutions into health systems.
🌍 A Policy Model for the Future
From a health-policy perspective, the SSMC initiative demonstrates how targeted screening, early intervention, technology assessment, and public-private collaboration can work together to create a more proactive model of chronic disease management.
For policymakers and health-system leaders, the broader lesson is clear: healthcare systems can increasingly move beyond treating disease after it becomes clinically apparent and instead identify risk earlier, establish structured care pathways, and deploy interventions designed to improve long-term outcomes.
As precision medicine and predictive healthcare continue to evolve, initiatives such as this could offer a blueprint for integrating prevention-focused models into mainstream healthcare delivery.
