Collaboration aims to expand access to trusted clinical expertise, enhance care delivery, and improve patient outcomes through advanced healthcare AI

ROCHESTER, Minn., and REDMOND, Wash. — Mayo Clinic and Microsoft have announced a strategic collaboration to develop and deploy a frontier artificial intelligence (AI) model purpose-built for healthcare. The initiative seeks to extend Mayo Clinic’s renowned clinical expertise and integrated care model to patients and healthcare providers worldwide.

The partnership combines Mayo Clinic’s extensive healthcare knowledge, de-identified clinical data, and longitudinal patient insights with Microsoft’s advanced AI, cloud computing, engineering, and superintelligence capabilities. Together, the organizations aim to create a next-generation healthcare AI model capable of supporting a broad spectrum of clinical reasoning and healthcare applications.

Designed to synthesize diverse clinical information, the frontier AI model is expected to assist in earlier disease detection, personalized treatment planning, and improved patient outcomes. By delivering actionable insights and supporting clinicians in complex decision-making, the collaboration seeks to address some of the healthcare industry’s most pressing challenges.

A key aspect of the initiative is that the AI model will remain under the ownership of Mayo Clinic, underscoring the institution’s commitment to patient trust, clinical excellence, safety, and responsible AI governance. Microsoft plans to make the model accessible through Azure Foundry APIs, enabling healthcare organizations globally to leverage advanced AI capabilities that support patients, clinicians, and consumers.

“Mayo Clinic is committed to putting patients first, and we have long believed AI can help transform healthcare,” said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, President and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “By combining our clinical expertise and trusted data foundation with Microsoft’s engineering and AI capabilities, we are building innovative solutions that bring more of Mayo Clinic’s expertise to more patients.”

Unlike general-purpose AI systems, healthcare-focused AI requires deep clinical context, longitudinal understanding, robust governance, and real-world validation. The model will initially be deployed within Mayo Clinic’s clinical environment, where it can be rigorously tested, refined, and optimized through practical application.

“Frontier medical intelligence is around the corner,” said Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI. “This collaboration brings together Mayo Clinic’s unparalleled clinical expertise and longitudinal medical insights with Microsoft’s AI capabilities to build a state-of-the-art foundation model for healthcare.”

The collaboration marks a significant step toward accelerating the adoption of healthcare-specific AI technologies that can improve clinical workflows, support healthcare professionals, and enhance patient care on a global scale.
