Abu Dhabi is breaking new ground in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). In a landmark collaboration, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), Yas Clinic–Khalifa City, and the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) have introduced an AI-powered MRI technique that promises earlier, more accurate detection of MS.

“This is a perfect example of the ‘bench-to-bedside’ journey,” said Professor Osama Abdullah, MRI Physicist at NYUAD’s Center for Brain and Health. “Our work focuses on pushing the boundaries of what MRI can reveal. Partnering with Yas Clinic and ADSCC allows us to validate these innovations directly in patient care.”

How it works
Diagnosing MS has long been complex, with symptoms overlapping other neurological disorders and conventional imaging offering limited clarity. The collaboration addresses these challenges with two innovations:

  • FLAIRstar module – an AI tool that detects the “central vein sign” (CVS), a biomarker now recognized in the McDonald 2024 criteria. By identifying CVS, the tool distinguishes MS lesions from those caused by migraines or vascular issues.
  • LAMINATE project – supported by the National MS Society, this initiative applies NYUAD’s refined MRI protocols directly in Yas Clinic practice while ensuring patient data remains within the UAE.

NYUAD also contributed advanced MRI analysis to Yas Clinic’s PHOMS clinical trial, helping track brain changes and assess treatments such as Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP).

Why it matters
Early diagnosis is critical for effective MS treatment. “Tools like FLAIRstar and LAMINATE are already improving diagnosis, accelerating treatment, and enhancing outcomes,” said Dr. Lev Brylev, Consultant Neurologist at Yas Clinic.

By shortening the path from symptoms to confirmed diagnosis, this approach reduces patient stress, cuts healthcare costs, and supports better long-term outcomes.

The bigger picture
Beyond technical progress, the project reflects Abu Dhabi’s ambitions to position itself as a global hub for healthcare innovation. With AI, imaging science, and clinical practice converging, the UAE is not just matching international standards—it is shaping new ones.
