Kaiser Permanente saw its annual operating revenue soar to new heights in 2024, reaching $115.8 billion, a 14.9% increase from the previous year, largely fueled by the growth of its value-based care subsidiary, Risant Health.

The nonprofit health system also reported a 14.6% rise in operating expenses, totaling $115.2 billion. Despite these costs, Kaiser—along with new Risant Health acquisitions Geisinger Health and Cone Health—posted an operating income of $569 million, reflecting a modest 0.3% operating margin.

Kaiser described the financial performance as a “modest improvement” over 2023’s $329 million operating income, citing persistent financial pressures such as rising prescription drug prices, increased costs of goods and services, and higher care volumes—especially in ambulatory care settings.

“To offset these factors, the organizations improved operational efficiencies and streamlined business functions,” Kaiser Permanente stated.

Net Income Triples, Boosted by Acquisitions and Market Gains

Kaiser Permanente’s net income more than tripled to $12.9 billion, primarily due to a $6.8 billion one-time gain from incorporating Geisinger and Cone Health’s unrestricted assets. Additionally, $5.5 billion in nonoperating income, largely attributed to investment returns, contributed to the bottom line.

Capital Spending and Future Investments

Capital spending for 2024 totaled $3.7 billion, a slight decrease from $3.8 billion in 2023. Investments were primarily directed toward:
✔ Meeting California’s earthquake safety standards set for 2030
✔ Enhancing environmental sustainability across facilities
✔ Advancing “leading-edge technologies” to improve healthcare delivery

With these strategic expansions and financial gains, Kaiser Permanente continues to reinforce its position as a leader in value-based care while navigating the industry’s evolving economic landscape.
