Santa Clara County IPA, California, has finalized a $150 million agreement with HCA Healthcare to purchase Regional Medical Center (RMC), a cornerstone of East San José’s healthcare landscape. The deal, outlined in a definitive Asset Purchase Agreement, will integrate RMC into the Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) system. Subject to regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions, the county expects to assume operational control by April 1.
Restoring Critical Services
RMC, a 258-bed facility, has served East San José for six decades, offering a range of essential medical services. However, HCA Healthcare’s decision in August 2024 to downgrade trauma, stroke, and cardiac services (STEMI) prompted the county to step in. The changes had led to a significant surge in trauma patients at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
The county plans to immediately reinstate Level II trauma care upon assuming operations, with STEMI and comprehensive stroke services to follow shortly thereafter. Labor and delivery services, which were discontinued in 2020, are also slated for future restoration.
A Legacy of Care and Investment
Despite the recent service reductions, RMC has been nationally recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 250 best hospitals for three consecutive years. HCA Healthcare has invested heavily in the facility over the past decade, upgrading access and meeting California’s seismic safety standards.
Ensuring a Seamless Transition
Both Santa Clara County and HCA Healthcare have committed to a smooth operational transition to minimize disruptions to health services. The county aims to uphold RMC’s legacy while meeting the diverse medical needs of the East San José community.
A Broader Trend in Healthcare Expansion
This acquisition is set against the backdrop of HCA Healthcare’s broader investment strategy. In 2024, HCA announced a $5 billion capital expenditure plan, focusing heavily on outpatient facilities. This includes the $231 million HCA Florida Gainesville Hospital, which is under construction and slated to open in 2026.
The integration of RMC into the SCVH system marks a significant step in addressing healthcare gaps in East San José, ensuring that vital trauma and specialty services remain accessible to the community.
