Elevance Health, the parent company of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, has finalized its acquisition of Indiana University Health Plans, a managed care organization affiliated with Indiana University Health. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

With the acquisition, IU Health Plans will now operate under Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana, offering Medicare Advantage Insurance Plans across 36 counties. The announcement, made Tuesday, follows Elevance’s September declaration that the deal would close by year-end.

Why This Deal Matters

IU Health Plans has a strong presence in Indiana as a managed care organization, delivering Medicare Advantage plans and fully insured commercial options to employers. The company employs over 160 Indiana-based staff and has garnered a reputation for high-quality service, community engagement, and comprehensive product offerings.

Elevance highlighted that this acquisition aligns with its whole-health strategy, leveraging IU Health Plans’ local brand recognition and its ability to consistently achieve high Medicare Advantage star ratings.

Broader Industry Trends

The acquisition comes amid a favorable outlook for Elevance Health. Investment analysis platform Seeking Alpha recently assigned Elevance a strong buy rating despite a 30% stock decline. The report cited the company’s solid fundamentals and market position in an industry poised to benefit from long-term trends such as an aging population and increased life expectancy.

While these trends are expected to drive sustained demand for healthcare services, challenges such as rising healthcare costs remain a concern for the industry.
